1996 Dry Creek Sangiovese

This is the first Ridge release of a varietal grown in Tuscany for more than three hundred years. It is unlikely that we would have added sangiovese to the long list of varietals Ridge already produces, had we not acquired a small parcel with our purchase of Lytton West. Despite the intensity of yields that were fifty percent below previous years, and grapes that were very ripe, adding cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon has given structure and fullness to the final wine. Firm acidity and clearly defined fruit recall its Italian origins. This excellent wine will soften with a year or two in bottle, and be at its best over the next six or seven. PD (12/97)
