100% Zinfandel
1996
Monte Bello
Santa Cruz Mountains
13.7%
The cool climate of Monte Bello Ridge is ideal for the Bordeaux varietals, and for chardonnay, but not warm enough to ripen zinfandel consistently. Spring storms cut back the crop by half; a very warm summer – for once – fully matured these century-old vines. This excellent, unusual, zinfandel shows concentrated black fruit, black pepper spice, and the mineral overtones imparted by limestone sub-soils. It will be enjoyable as the tannins soften this next year, and most appealing over the next five years.
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare vineyards where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Fine wine, when made traditionally, is the result of a natural process. Ridge’s aim is to implement that process; using traditional methods and minimal handling, we strive to produce the highest quality wines from superior and distinctive fruit.
