For the latest edition of her Throwback Thursday column, wine writer Jancis Robinson reposts her April, 2001 article – “Is California dreaming? – an extraordinary assessment of the cult wines that cost more than Bordeaux’s first growths” and names Ridge Monte Bello the steal of the bunch, tasted alongside early 90s vintages of Araujo Eisele, Dalle Valle Maya, Caymus Special Selection, Stags Leap Cask 23, Harlan Estate, and Screaming Eagle.

This lovely and well-proven wine was certainly distinctive, consistently delicious and characterful, well balanced, not too big, and the best wine was, tellingly, the oldest. This is a Californian wine made to a more recognisably European formula, one that requires age of a wine…
