Ridge Wines – Covetable and Collectable

Jancis Robinson

November 2019

Tom Parker recently reviewed over 50 wines from California deemed ‘covetable‘ and ‘collectable‘. Included in the tasting were several wines, mostly from the 2005 and 2006 vintages as well as the 2015 and 2016 vintages. Parker compares the two sets of vintages, identifying ’05 and ’06 as ‘Covetable‘ and ’15 and ’16 as ‘Collectable.’

“Many of the young ‘Collectable’ Cabernet Sauvignons on show were from 2016 and 2015. Both vintages are highly regarded but can be stylistically quite different. Both were part of a run of drought years in California, but the 2016s have a greater intensity of fruit in the mid palate, brighter acidity and added freshness whereas the 2015s can have disjointed high alcohol and a dried fruit character.”

“The older ‘Covetable’ Cabernets were largely from 2005 and 2006 – two cooler, less powerful vintages that are softening nicely now that they have reached their teens.”

Our 2016 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 2017 Geyserville both made the list with suggested drinking windows through 2030.

Deep purple colour. Focused, pure nose of cassis here. Flecks of sweet and savoury spices add complexity, but this is driven by black fruit. The palate is muscular and rich in structure. Despite this, the intensity of fruit adds an approachability that belies the chalky tannins. Vibrant and yet ripe, this finds the perfect balance between sweetness and tension. Excellent.

Deep, saturated purple in the glass. A classic nose of strawberries and cream, but there is also a hint of blueberry, violet and hedgerow. The tannins are rounded and allow the fruit to shine. Oily black fruits are cut by bright acids. Polished and succulent, with a long and rounded finish.
