Vintage Notes

In the fall of 1982, the three Zinfandel vineyards on the York Creek Ranch were still unripe and the berries firm when unseasonably early rains hit the Napa Valley. At 1600 to 2000 feet on Spring Mountain, the York Creek grapes were undamaged, but in the valley losses were serious. This is an elegant and beautifully defined wine that should begin to soften by winter. With Petite Sirah contributing complexity and longevity, it is one of our “collector’s” Zinfandels, that is, it has the tanning and balance to develop considerably with bottle age. PD (6/84)

History

Ridge wine is made with an emphasis on quality and naturalness that is rarely attempted. Our grapes are grown in select vineyards (usually identified on the label), where they are left to ripen to peak maturity, often at some loss of quantity. We let the wine settle and age in small barrels, with only rare cellar treatment other than racking. Varieties are not blended unless indicated on the label. Near Black Mountain on Monte Bello Ridge, our main vineyard is 10 miles south of Palo Alto, 15 miles inland from the ocean, and over 2000 feet in elevation.
