Vintage Notes

Fifteen years ago the York Creek viticulturists marked the best vines in the one-hundred-year-old Picchetti vineyard on Monte Bello Ridge. That winter they took cuttings and established their upper Zinfandel vineyard, which has since provided the major part of our York Creek. In 1983 the cool weather produced an elegant style from these grapes. After a full malolactic fermentation it was aged seventeen months in small oak cooperage. This excellent wine is quite approachable, yet its balance and structure will extend the period of development over the next five or six years. PD (6/85)

History

Ridge wine is made with an emphasis on quality and naturalness that is rarely attempted. Our grapes are grown in select vineyards (usually identified on the label), where they are left to ripen to peak maturity, often at some loss of quantity. We let the wine settle and age in small barrels, with only rare cellar treatment other than racking. Varieties are not blended unless indicated on the label. Near Black Mountain on Monte Bello Ridge, our main vineyard is 10 miles south of Palo Alto, 15 miles inland from the ocean, and over 2000 feet in elevation.
