This year’s cool, wet spring led to a late start to the growing season, and generally mild summer temperatures delayed the start of harvest by several weeks, but the quality of fruit looks excellent and yields have returned to something closer to normal after three years of drought.
Harvest kicked off a bit later than normal this year, with the first pick coming from the Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa County on August 30th. The zinfandel and carignane from Evangelho’s ancient vines were delivered to winemaker Trester Goetting and the rest of the Monte Bello team, who were there with champagne flutes in hand to celebrate the first fruit from what looks to be an exceptional vintage.
At Lytton Springs, the first grapes hit the crush pad on September 11th and came from the blocks of our own Lytton Estate Vineyard that we use to make rosé. Winemaker Shauna Rosenblum and the Lytton Springs team welcomed small lots of zinfandel, cinsaut, and trousseau from Lytton West to kick off the season, then brought in several other small picks.
