Bedrock

History

In 2013, we sourced fruit from the Bedrock Vineyard and produced our first Hooker Creek Zinfandel. We chose the name Hooker Creek in keeping with a long tradition at RIDGE of looking back to the history of the vineyard and choosing a name that honors the historic nature of the place and the pioneering individuals who helped establish the vineyards. The Bedrock Vineyard has a creek that runs through it called Hooker Creek, named after the Civil War general Joseph Hooker who originally developed the land in the 1800’s. Beginning with the 2020 vintage, the wines from this vineyard are now called Bedrock, the current name of the vineyard.

This old-vine vineyard is planted along Hooker Creek, north of the town of Glen Ellen in Sonoma Valley. The section of the vineyard we receive fruit from was planted in 1888 on a part of the Agua Caliente Spanish Land grant purchased from General Vallejo by Joseph Hooker and William Sherman in 1854. On the property are numerous ancient plantings of Zinfandel and mixed-varietal blocks containing Zin, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Mouvedre, Carignane, and more. The cooler climate, unique collection of interplanted varietals, and exceptional age of the old vines make for wines with complexity, personality, and delicious, ripe fruit flavors.
