As the vines swell with fruit and temperatures rise to welcome summer, we turn to lighter-style wines. While we can’t deny the appeal of a refreshing glass of Lytton Estate Rosé or Estate Chardonnay from the Monte Bello ridge, VinePair‘s latest article offers another option: chillable reds.
“California’s Ridge Vineyards is known for its bold red blends, but the winery really switches it up with this small-production Napa Valley Valdiguié. This wine encapsulates the idea of a “juicy” red. There are no tannins in sight there, just pure fruit notes of watermelon Jolly Rancher, ripe raspberries, and orange zest, all lifted by refreshing acidity.”
Grown on a small parcel of the historic Frediani Vineyard in the town of Calistoga, valdiguié is exceptionally rare in this part of Napa Valley, where high-end Cabernet Sauvignon dominates.
This thin-skinned French variety is enjoying a bit of a renaissance in California for its bright, juicy fruit, light body, and versatility with food. Enjoy it on a warm summer day with your favorite cheese and charcuterie.
