“The land that Ridge Vineyards would ultimately own was planted in 1886 by physician Osea Perrone; not far away, Pierre Klein, a Frenchman who became an influential California winemaker, bought 160 acres in 1888. The reputation of Klein’s and Rixford’s wines would draw the world’s attention to California well before Napa had established more than a toehold.”
