Vintage Notes

A late start for the growing season and a relatively cool summer delayed the zinfandel harvest at York Creek by two to three weeks in 1991. The “Race Track” vineyard provided the majority of the fruit, and a lovely indian summer ripened all the grapes by late October. The wine was aged in air-dried american oak barrels, twenty-five percent in new wood. In assembling the wine, York Creek petite sirah was included for structure and its distinctive black pepper spice. Though York Creek Zinfandels can typically age for a decade, their appealing spice and berry fruit are most intense in the early years. PD (4/93)

History

30 years ago, Ridge made its first Monte Bello, and two years later its first zinfandel. As pioneers of single-vineyard wines, we explored California in search of great vineyards where climate, soil, and varietal are perfectly matched. To bring the distinctive character of each vineyard to the wine, we use the minimal handling typical of traditional winemaking.
