Mazzoni Home Ranch
Alexander Valley
13.5%
Unsettled spring weather in this exceptionally late year substantially reduced yields on the ninety-five year-old Mazzoni vineyard. That small crop, however, turned out to be a blessing; the fruit matured fully by the second week of October, nearly a month later than usual. The interplanted zinfandel, carignane, and petite sirah that make up this field blend were fermented together on their naturally-occurring yeast in one large fermentor. Aged in one- and two-year-old air dried american oak, this round, lovely wine will be at its best over the next five years.
Giuseppe Mazzoni first made wine at the home ranch just north of Geyserville around 1910. His son Fred made the last wines there two years before his death in 1978. Twelve years ago the land was sold to its present owner, Nick Oltranti, who has maintained the old vineyards.
