50% Zinfandel, 32% Carignane, 18% Petite Sirah
1999
Mazzoni Home Ranch
Alexander Valley
13.7%
The growing season was as late this year as last, and low yields again ensured full ripening. These one hundred- year-old vines are planted in a field blend typical of nineteenth-century north coast vineyards. One of the parcels combines zinfandel equally with petite sirah, another equally with carignane. A third is almost entirely carignane. All three were fermented separately on their own yeast in small (six foot by six foot, six ton capacity) tanks, with the grapes held submerged in the liquid. Twenty percent of the wine spent twelve months in new, air-dried american oak; the balance aged in similar three-year-old barrels. This spicy, appealing field blend will be at its best over the next five years.
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, exploring California in search of those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. Our aim is to guide the natural process; using traditional methods and minimal handling, we strive to produce the highest quality wines from superior and distinctive fruit.
