Vintage Notes

As if to celebrate twenty-five years of York Creek Zinfandels, a long, lovely fall and low yields produced, unbidden, our first late-picked wine from these vines. After natural primary and secondary fermentations, the wine was racked to air-dried american barrels. Twentyseven percent were new, thirty-seven percent two years old—made from Appalachian-grown white oak. The rest were four-year-old barrels of Missouri-grown white oak. The wine is very rich, with a touch of residual sugar, yet clearly defined by its firm tannins. Its size might indicate pairing with food that is equally rich. This fine zinfandel will be at its best over the next three to five years, while the fruit is most intense. PD (1/01)
