Winemaker Tasting Notes

Nose of peach and rose petal. Complexity meets freshness on the palate with notes of strawberry, crushed rocks and balanced acidity. SR (1/25)

Vintage Notes

A second year of above-average rainfall replenished the vines. Picking in order of ripeness began with young cinsaut on August 21st. Next, the oldest vines, which include zinfandel and grenache, interplanted in 1902 on Hill 2. Finally, ripe mataro and counoise, which were ready by September 20th. Elegant fruit flavors showcase this expression of the vineyard. SR (11/24)

History

Our first Lytton Estate Rosé was 2016. Each year, since then, we make a rosé culled from the range of Rhône varieties and zinfandel planted throughout our Lytton Springs vineyard. Extemporaneously produced by taste, the makeup of the wine changes vintage-to-vintage. As such, each spring upon release, it offers a unique opportunity to experience an old vineyard from a fresh angle.

Growing Season

Rainfall: 64 inches (above average)
Bloom: Early June
Weather: A warm spring and a very hot July were followed by average temperatures in August and September. We experienced another heat spell in early October at the very end of harvest.

Winemaking

Harvest Dates: 22 August – 20 September
Grapes: Average Brix 22.0˚
TA: 6.9 g/L
pH: 3.46
Fermentation: 100% direct-to-press whole-cluster; primary and secondary in stainless steel.
Aging: 3 months in 100% stainless steel

Hand-harvested, organically grown, estate grapes; whole-cluster pressed; fermented in stainless steel, followed by a partial malolactic on the naturally occurring malolactic bacteria; minimum effective sulfur for this wine (35ppm at crush, 46ppm over the course of aging); pad filtered at bottling. In keeping with our philosophy of minimal intervention, this is the sum of our actions.
